Looking for a tool to easily fulfill day-to-day Active Directory reporting needs

Hi All,

Thanks to the economy, we've been asked to (further) reduce operational costs. (Sometimes I wish these bean-counters could try doing our jobs even for one day, so they realize just how much we do with how little anyway.)

One of the things we end up spending a lot of time on is maintaining our internal scripts. We also end up making changes every now and then as we discover inconsistencies stemming from our mistakes. In a nutshell, its just a lot of boring and tedious work that takes a lot of time.

We've been looking for a easy-to-use, reliable tool that can help us fulfill our day-today reporting needs. It need not be fancy, but it needs to meet certain basic criteria -

  1. Reliable - We need to be able to trust it.

  2. Reporting - We need it to be able to generate reports

  3. Customization - We need it to be able to customize reports

  4. Data Output - We need it to be able to export data for archival

  5. Simplicity - It needs to be simple to use

  6. Support - We absolutely need for it to be supported

  7. Licensing - We need it to be usable by at least 5 admins

  8. Pricing - Needless to say, its got to be within our measly budget

We've looked around a bit, but haven't really found anything that meets all our criteria. There are some that can do basic reporting, but aren't reliable at all, then there are others that are fancy but complicated.

Would like to know what some of you are using; all inputs appreciated.

Thx guys.

Danny

Dear Mr. Danny,

Have you checked out ADManager Plus? It is a very good all-purpose reporting tool and it can help you with all your reporting needs.

It is also cheap and affordable, because it is developed in India, so no expensive US developer costs are there to pass on to you. It also has good support.

I would suggest you try it. It will be very good for you.

Krishna Raju.

Hi Danny,

Have you tried Quest's Reporter? Some of my comrades used to work for Quest, so I know it is a good tool with lot of reports, and good support plans.

Hello Danny,

Jiji Reports is another good inexpensive tool developed in the Indian sub-continent. You may wish to evaluate it if you have not already done so.

Thanks,

Chaitanya

Hello Danny,

I don't know about comprehensive reporting, but if you are looking for group management and reporting tool, GroupID is a good tool to consider.

Thanks,

Imtiaz.

Danny,

Maybe you should consider adinfo. Its developed by a young (23-year old!) British lad and can generate over a 100 Active Directory reports. Its also free (that's good yeah) I believe, although a standard version may be available too.

Samuel.

All,

Thank you for your suggestions. All suggestions are respectable!

As a security conscious organization, we did some basic diligence and feedback I got from our team, in regards to these suggested tools was -

AD Manager Plus and Jiji Reports are good and cost-effective reporting tools, but are built in India (here, and here), and our company is unwilling to deploy tools built in India for use by AD Admins due to basic relability/ security reasons.

Quest's Reporter, is quite expensive (we believe ~ $8/user), and may soon be a Dell product, so chances of its support getting outsourced to India are high.

AdInfo is certainly capable, but from an organizational stand-point, deploying a tool built, tested, supported and architected by just one young individual is just not a possibility for liability reasons.

GroupID is very easy to use but is more of a group management solution, than being a full-fledged Active Directory reporting solution.

So, that still leaves looking for a good Active Directory reporting tool.

If only a tool could be as capable as AD Manager Plus, built in the US/UK such as AdInfo, be as easy to use as GroupID, and be less expensive than Quest's Reporter, I think it would be our dream AD reporting tool.

Still open to suggestions.

Danny.

Danny,

There is ONE tool that meets all your criteria - Gold Finger for Active Directory.

Based on my experience, here is how it measures up based on your critieria:

1. Security: Built in USA

2. Capability: Offers 200 security, access and effective-access reports

3. Cutomization: All security reports can be customized using LDAP filters

4. Data Output: It lets you export data to CSV files and PDF format

5. Ease of use: Offers fully-automated one-button reporting

6. Reliability: Is backed by free technical support

7. Economical: A basic edition license costs just $199 I believe

We have been using it for over a year now, and are very happy with it. I believe it is used by many organizations including Microsoft, IBM, and the U.S Government.

If you need more information, you can find it here.

Regards,

Jack.
